Three ways bikeshare can be more equitable in DC
Bikesharing has gained popularity in US cities as concerns about health, congestion, and climate change have increased. In 2010, the DC Department of Transportation introduced the first city-operated bikesharing system in North America. Since then, Capital Bikeshare users have generated millions of rides, but use and station placement varies around the city. Keep reading…

Here’s what DDOT Director Jeff Marootian had to say at TranspoCamp
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has a backlog of critical infrastructure projects. It's faced with the challenge of cross-jurisdictional cooperation on Metro, mobility alternatives to cars, a shortage of housing, and more. Nonetheless, the agency’s director is upbeat about efforts that are currently (or will soon be) underway aimed at making it safer to get around the city via all modes. Keep reading…

Members took 99% of Capital Bikeshare’s e-bike trips, and other insights from the data
In early September 2019, Capital Bikeshare launched its CaBi Plus electric-assist pilot, introducing 80 black-painted bikes that give you a boost while you ride. The pilot is slated to run through the end of the year, and since we're approximately at the halfway point, now is a great time to dive into the data and see how the pilot is going. Keep reading…

Five graphs that show how dockless bikeshare and CaBi work in DC
Over the past year, five dockless bikeshare companies have launched in DC. Four of them are either gone or are pivoting to scooters. But while they were here, how did their operations impact and compare with Capital Bikeshare's? I led a team at Georgetown University that investigated this question. Keep reading…

Let’s bring 20,000 shared bikes to DC
DC has set a goal that by 2032, 25% of all commutes be walking or biking. Dockless bike and scooter programs can help us get to this goal, but we need to embrace an expansive vision of the system.

Dockless bikeshare helped grow the total shared bicycle trips in DC
Dockless bikeshare has increased the total number of shared bike trips taken in DC, and District pedal-pushers have probably added to those trip totals without eating into the large and growing ridership of Capital Bikeshare. That’s according to data presented by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) on May 2 to the Bicycle Advisory Council for DC. Keep reading…

It’s not a bike, it’s a bike-shaped Uber that says “JUMP”
Riding the electric-assist Jump bike isn't really like riding a bike. In my mental calculations of which transportation mode I'd take to a long-distance location, Jump isn't competing with other bike shares — it's competing with Uber or car2go. Keep reading…

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever brought home without a car?
A while ago we asked you what weird things you’ve seen people carry on Metro. Now, we’d like to talk about all the weird, oversized and just plain hard to carry things you’ve carted around without a vehicle, period. Our contributors talk about some of those things they’ve tried to carry around here. Keep reading…

One bike parking mistake Takoma Park made, and what we’ve learned from it
For me, a light went on after I made a mistake. I had pushed bicycling infrastructure as a member of the Takoma Park City Council, but when we brought Capital Bikeshare stations to the city in 2013, I was too quick to recommend locating the bikes where they wouldn’t inconvenience drivers, instead of where they’d be most convenient for bicyclists. Keep reading…
