It’s not a bike, it’s a bike-shaped Uber that says “JUMP”
Riding the electric-assist Jump bike isn't really like riding a bike. In my mental calculations of which transportation mode I'd take to a long-distance location, Jump isn't competing with other bike shares — it's competing with Uber or car2go. Keep reading…

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever brought home without a car?
A while ago we asked you what weird things you’ve seen people carry on Metro. Now, we’d like to talk about all the weird, oversized and just plain hard to carry things you’ve carted around without a vehicle, period. Our contributors talk about some of those things they’ve tried to carry around here. Keep reading…

One bike parking mistake Takoma Park made, and what we’ve learned from it
For me, a light went on after I made a mistake. I had pushed bicycling infrastructure as a member of the Takoma Park City Council, but when we brought Capital Bikeshare stations to the city in 2013, I was too quick to recommend locating the bikes where they wouldn’t inconvenience drivers, instead of where they’d be most convenient for bicyclists. Keep reading…

Because of Metro’s $0.25 increase, I’m walking, biking, ride hailing more
Over the two weeks since the WMATA systemwide fare increases went into effect, I have noticed the subtle effect they are having on my mode choice and travel behavior. When it comes to daily decisions on how to get around, as the old adage goes, perception is reality. Keep reading…

A “rogue” bikeshare company, Mobike, may be coming to DC
DC could soon get a new kind of bike sharing from a Chinese company, Mobike, which has advertised for two job positions here. Would that be good or bad for bicycling and transportation? Keep reading…

“Bikes are happiness machines.” Behind the Handlebars with cyclist extraordinaire Joe Flood
Joe Flood came to DC nearly 20 years ago to study at American University. Biking here, there, and everywhere while living car-free, Joe logs 60-70 miles behind the handlebars each week. He and I recently sat down to talk about all kinds of things related to riding bikes in DC, from plugging into the bike community via social media to how to make DC safer for cyclists. Keep reading…

Chat: What’s it like to be a woman on a bike?
Other countries, like Germany and the Netherlands, have about a 1:1 ratio but in the US, that's more about 4:1. Why is this, and what can be done about it? We discuss in a new chat format. Keep reading…

The sky won’t fall when new homes come to St. Joseph’s Seminary in Michigan Park
Eighty new rowhouses are likely on their way to the St. Joseph’s Seminary site in Michigan Park, just north of Brookland. The DC Zoning Commission will rule on the developer’s plan this week, and while a group of opponents have provided a steady stream of over-the-top arguments for why the project shouldn’t go up, a lot of neighbors and community projects have been vocal with their support. Keep reading…

Arlington will likely require less parking near Metro stations
Currently, new residential developments near Metro stations in Arlington have to come with a certain amount of parking. The amount required, however, could soon drop, a move that reflects a growing understanding of how excess parking promotes urban sprawl and traffic congestion and drives up housing prices. Keep reading…

For some, Capital Bikeshare remains the most convenient way to travel
More than three-fourths of Capital Bikeshare members have a station within five blocks of their house, and about one-third started using the system more after Metro started SafeTrack. These numbers—and many other facts about CaBi users—come from CaBi’s most recent membership survey. Keep reading…

Two Metro workers were injured in an accident involving the electrified third rail. DC gained exciting architecture in 2016 in the form of a new museum, schools, and libraries. The National Capital Planning Commission votes today on the final guidelines for the development to replace the FBI headquarters in DC. One of the commission's recommendations? Slimmer sidewalks. Coming soon: Bikeshare in Prince George’s County
Right now, there isn’t bikeshare in Prince George’s County outside of a small system in College Park. But that could change, as the county recently wrapped up a study on what kind of system should come in (spoiler: it’ll be Capital Bikeshare) and where its stations could go. Keep reading…

When bikeshare stations are near Metro, more people use them… especially if they’re outside of DC
Bikeshare can help get people to a Metro station when they live or work too far away to walk there. As a result, the region’s busiest Bikeshare stations are next to Metro, especially outside of DC. Keep reading…
