Breakfast links: It is the east
Not relaxed about new restaurant
The owner of a relaxation-themed store in Brookland doesn’t want a new restaurant and bar nearby, because it might generate noise and make it harder to park. The ANC agrees, but other residents don’t. (WJLA)
Retailers look eastward
Retailers are looking harder at parts of DC farther east. IMAX might want a theater east of 7th Street, and Subway is interested in Ward 7. (WBJ) … See renderings of Sweetgreen and a movie theater in the Capital Riverfront. (JDland)
Anacostia needs arts and more
The arts can be a part of revitalizing Anacostia, but can’t be the only element if it’s to succeed. Residents also have to realize that one arts organization can’t solve every social problem at once, either. (CHOTR)
No place to wait
There are long lines at DC’s TANF assistance centers, and no waiting rooms. That forces people who need services to wait outside, and contributes to a perception that Anacostia is “the ghetto” for no good reason. (CHOTR) (Tip: @terryscott)
Metro morsels
You will be able to use SmartBenefits to buy the new short rail pass within a year. (Examiner) … A WMATA employee stole 13 $1,400 defibrillators and sold them on eBay. (DCist) … A Metrobus driver struck a pedestrian in Olney. (Post)
Potomac Yard Metro delayed some more
Alexandria is delaying its decision on where to place the Potomac Yard Metro station, to have time for public outreach that’s not over the summer. That will push the opening to 2017. (Examiner, caps fan) (Tip: caps fan)
Hirshhorn stays donut, won’t get bubble
The Hirshhorn “bubble” probably will not happen after the board of trustees split on whether to support it. The Hirshhorn’s director then resigned. (City Paper)
More homes for sale
More people are selling homes in April, a possible sign of further economic recovery. Listings increased most in Stafford, Fredericksburg, and Montgomery. This could slow the rise in prices. (Post)
And…
Some guys find a former roommate’s stolen bike and repossess it. (City Paper) … Part of a Montgomery Mall garage under construction collapsed and killed a worker. (Post) … Norton, Gray to Congress: hands off our budget. (WAMU)
