DC can’t have statehood because… of parking?
On September 19, 2019, the House of Representatives held a historic hearing on a bill to admit DC (except for a core of federal buildings and lands) as the 51st state appropriately numbered HR 51. One of the weirdest arguments against statehood was from Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie (R), who said it would be too hard to park in DC if it became a state. Keep reading…

DC and its residents are real. Lying about that helped enable Wednesday’s attack on the US Capitol.

Make DC part of Maryland? Most GGWash contributors don’t like the idea.
Social media and local blogs exploded last week when Utah Representative Jason Chaffetz said he was “exploring” returning a portion of DC to the state of Maryland. Some GGWash contributors like the idea of more consolidated regional planning as well as real congressional representation for the District, but others aren't so into the thought of setting aside the dream of home rule in order to become a Maryland municipality. Last week, Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz reintroduced the the centuries-old idea of returning the vast majority of DC to Maryland. While the consensus is largely that Chaffetz is meddling in District affairs, some residents might actually go for the idea. Let’s take a look at how retrocession would work and at some of the potential side effects. Keep reading…
