3 ped crashes, one hour
Three drivers hit pedestrians this weekend, in Greenbelt, near Seven Corners, and at 14th and Constitution in DC. Two of the victims died. The Fairfax and DC drivers did not stop. (Post)
All three areas are designed primarily for vehicle throughput, creating dangerous conditions for pedestrians. Also, Matt Zapotosky almost entirely avoids the word “accident” in his story.
More safety along Connecticut
DDOT has formulated recommendations for traffic calming and pedestrian safety in the Sheridan-Kalorama neighborhood (huge PDF) and is beginning to study them for Connecticut Avenue in Cleveland Park. The Council specifically allocated $1.5 million for Connecticut Avenue. (Current, Ward3DC)
Big idea: clear sidewalks
Fairfax County is having a “snow summit” on March 16th, and has an online tool for people to suggest ideas for improvement. The top idea so far: requiring sidewalk shoveling. There’s also one about not plowing snow onto sidewalks.
I don’t walk, so walkability is bunk
A candidate for the Howard County Council seat covering Downtown Columbia says that his family wouldn’t take transit, and therefore a pedestrian-friendly Columbia is worthless. (Tales of Two Cities, Dan Reed) (Tip: Dan Reed)
Anti-density of the week
This week’s residents arguing proposed development will destroy their neighborhood are in Tenleytown, where AU’s campus plan proposes more density and more students (huge PDF) which some Tenleytowners abhor. (Current)
Yes, a bicycle is a transportation device
John “a bicycle is not a transportation device” Cook has admitted that bicycles can be used for transportation, but since most people he knows drive, he opposes even a small fraction of funding for bike facilities that might increase that number. (TheWashCycle)
Virginia Avenue bike tunnel?
To expand freight rail capacity through DC, CSX hopes to build a new tunnel parallel to the Virginia Avenue (SE) tunnel for temporary use during construction. Why not keep it afterward for other uses, like a railbanked bike trail? (TheWashCycle)
