Ask GGW: where should an auto-minimizing family live?
Reader Mark and his family are moving to the Greater Washington area. They are, in many ways, a typical area family: the parents are in their 30s, own dogs, want good schools and a safe area for their kids, and can spend about $500-800,000 for a house. Keep reading…

Lunch links: Three steps forward, two steps back edition
Arlington moving toward performance parking: Arlington’s recently-approved Master Transportation Plan includes a policy of making meter prices “vary by hour and location to better match parking availability and demand.” county staff said a detailed proposal is in the works and may be approved by the County Board in December. (Infosnack HQ)… Keep reading…

Breakfast links: suburban changes edition
The official word on the I-66 deck: Infosnack HQ made some calls and found out the detailed scoop on the parking garage. One of five parking decks is free to the public, and fills up with commuters on weekdays (why can’t they charge, again?) while the others are used by Arlington Public Schools. Keep reading…

Huge deck over I-66
Reader mfs asks a question I’ve always wondered about too: There’s a very large deck over I-66 in Arlington, which from satellite photos appears to be just a parking lot. Anyone know why this is here, and why anyone would spend the money to deck over a freeway just to put parking atop it? Keep reading…

After hearing numerous arguments by residents against legalizing accessory dwellings, the Arlington County Board passed the proposal, but not without first watering it down further. According to the Sun Gazette, the Board amended the proposal to only allow 28 accessory permits per year (the number planners had estimated people would apply for) and to require an owner to live in… Keep reading…

Arlingtonians: speak up for accessory dwellings
Tomorrow, the Arlington County Board is having a hearing on the proposal to legalize accessory dwellings. This would allow homeowners (but only those who live in their homes) in single-family neighborhoods to create an apartment for two people (like a garage apartment). Keep reading…

Best places to live… if gas were still $1.50
Money has one of those silly rankings of the best places to live in America. Columbia, Maryland is #8; Hunter Mill, Sully, and Burke, Virginia #19, 25, and 31 respectively; Gaithersburg #29, Reston #37, and Rockville #66. Keep reading…

The parking front of the commuter “war”
Ryan Avent points out that on the same weekend the Post ran the awful Weiss article calling DC’s pro-pedestrian policies a “war on commuters,” the Post also reported that Tysons planners and developers plan less parking. Funny, I wonder why Weiss didn’t write about Fairfax’s “war on commuters.”… Keep reading…

Lower speed limits, wider lanes won’t fix the GW Parkway
It was designed as a scenic, recreational “gateway” to Washington, but the George Washington Parkway has become a major commuter highway—and a dangerous one at that. The Post discusses the road’s inherent conflicts between its scenic, curving, historic character and the inevitable dangers of high-speed traffic on a narrow road right at the Potomac’s… Keep reading…
