Two plans devise opposite approaches for Rockville Pike
Two separate plans in Montgomery County hope to transform parts of Rockville Pike from disjointed chains of strip malls into walkable districts. Each would reconfigure the road to more urban boulevard layouts, but each does so differently, carrying some leading to a danger of creating two, slightly incompatible configurations adjacent to one another. At White Flint, in unincorporated… Keep reading…

Facebook, live comments diametrically opposed on skybridge
The Montgomery County Council has again rejected a skybridge for the Silver Spring library, but the hearing revealed some fascinating facts about the ways people debate in person and on social media. On Tuesday, at-large councilmember Hans Riemer asked his Facebook followers what they thought about a long-running controversy: whether to build a skybridge over Fenton Street… Keep reading…

A driver hit and killed Kelay Smith on Pennsylvania Avenue in District Heights in August 2008. There is a 200-foot gap in the sidewalk, forcing people to walk along the road with fast-moving traffic. According to the Post, one… Keep reading…

Silver Spring bike/ped connection nixes trees, ruffles feathers
Recently, Montgomery County created a small connection between the dead-end of Woodbury Drive and Fenton Street in accordance with the county’s planned trails in the area. This connection is needed to complete the Grove Street on-road bike route between the Green Trail at Wayne Avenue and the Metropolitan Branch Trail at Fenton Street. Unfortunately, they… Keep reading…

Discovery’s “secret garden” should be reopened to public
The danger of public spaces in private hands is that they can cease to be public spaces entirely, especially when fears about crime or safety arise. Yesterday, I was hassled by a security guard at Discovery Communications’ headquarters in downtown Silver Spring for taking the photo of their Sensory Garden at right. The garden, dedicated to TV host Steve Irwin, is one… Keep reading…
