Dinner links: hungry for good architecture, stimulus money
Not so historic: Prince of Petworth posts a very non-historic building in Capitol Hill. Good reason to have historic preservation laws, or a nice addition of variety to the block? Keep reading…

Breakfast links: Stretch your mind
Do cities hurt your brain? The Boston Globe writes that “Just being in an urban environment, [reserachers] have found, impairs our basic mental processes. … While it’s long been recognized that city life is exhausting — that’s why Picasso left Paris — this new research suggests that cities actually dull our thinking, sometimes dramatically… Keep reading…

Morning links: watch out for the future
Danger: falling budgets: Metro is just the latest transit agency nationwide to warn of a looming budget crisis. Metro staff proposed $176 million in cuts, of which $103 million would come from staff and expenses and $73 million in service cuts. The board promised not to raise fares until 2010, though they could change their minds. No word yet on which cuts will happen. Keep reading…

Breakfast links: Unexpected consequences
Save the trail, prevent other trails: Creators of the Capital Crescent Trail always intended it to run along with transit. A bike trail was a good immediate use of a temporarily unused transit ROW. Now that Montgomery residents opposed to transit are opposing the Purple Line because of the trail, one original trail planner regrets creating it in the first place. Boxing Day links: bikes, buses and blogs
Ticket dismissed: One of the bicyclists ticketed for riding the wrong way on New Hampshire Avenue by U Street, Sam DuPont, successfully appealed his citation. DuPont argued that “going the wrong way on NH was the only safe way to navigate that part of the city, and that DDOT has recognized this fact in their plans to install contraflow bike lanes on that very block.”… Keep reading…

Christmas Eve links: Transportation wishes and ill-advised gifts
Wanted: more downtown burrito options: Matthew Yglesias writes about the scarce options for good burritos in downtown DC. The only good places are on food carts or in alleys, which means that either retail rents on streets are too high, or we need more food carts and alley eateries. (DC is working on new cart vending regulations, to mixed reviews thus far.)… Keep reading…

Breakfast links: Actions for transit
MoCo planning staff endorse light rail: Reports of Planning Board staff endorsing a bus Purple Line have been greatly exaggerated. A staff report released yesterday endorses the surface light rail option, including the segment parallel to the Capital Crescent Trail. “We have to grow, and we have to do it in a way that is sustainable … in a reasonable way that is less dependent… Keep reading…
