Time, vigilance will work out the bugs in the 15th Street lane
Press coverage of the 15th Street bike lane has moved beyond the “people are confused” frame to “let’s see how this works.” That’s the right attitude. As I’ve written so many times before, there’s no substitute for actual, on-the-ground experience to find the best ways to move pedestrians, bikes and cars safely and fairly. Keep reading…

15th Street bike lane almost done, but won’t go north of U
The protected, contraflow bike lane on 15th Street will be completed this week, DDOT officials say. After notifying residents from Massachusetts Avenue to U Street, DDOT has been hard at work painting the lane, installing pylons, and putting up signs: DDOT’s contractor also started to install the lane between U and V Streets, which makes a lot of sense to connect… Keep reading…

DDOT is ready to begin construction on a protected, contraflow lane for bicyclists to ride south on 15th Street NW between U Street and Massachusetts Avenue. By placing the lane adjacent to the sidewalk, buffered from high-speed traffic by parked cars, this will create a more comfortable environment for cyclists. According… Keep reading…

Where’s the 15th Street contraflow lane?
In February, DDOT decided to experimentally modify 15th Street, NW between Massachusetts Avenue and Florida Avenue to include the city’s first protected bicycle lane. That lane would let cyclists ride south along 15th, opposite the flow of traffic. Cyclists could also ride northbound in a regular bicycle lane. This is a cheap, quick change that DDOT could make with some paint,… Keep reading…

Doubts about cycle track, concerns about process
DC’s bicycle leaders aren’t as sanguine as I was about DDOT’s fifth option for 15th Street. WABA’s Eric Gilliland wonders if there’s enough room for the contraflow lane: Keep reading…

DDOT proposes new option with cycle track for 15th Street
When a group of residents on 15th Street asked DDOT to find ways to slow traffic on their “urban highway” of a street, DDOT planners created four alternatives. 15th street is much wider than necessary, with four northbound lanes that suddenly funnel into only one after New Hampshire Avenue. One neighborhood historian told me that this road was meant to connect to the east-west… Keep reading…
