Will Gaithersburg stay green and chicken-friendly?
Urban chickens are an essentially free, organic, and local source of food, fertilizer, and pest control. Keep reading…

Should Chinatown be Times Square?
New York’s Times Square is the tourist heart of that city. It is filled with bright lights, chain restaurants, and professional entertainment that draws visitors from all over the world. 230 miles south of Times Square is Gallery Place. Since the MCI Center opened in 1997, it has been (after the National Mall) the tourist heart of Washington, DC. It is filled with bright… Keep reading…

Region’s small cities used to be relatively big
The US Census webpage is a treasure trove of interesting information about cities. Want to know where the most dense neighborhoods are, or what percentage of residents of an area are immigrants? It’s all there. One of the most fascinating pages lists the 100 largest cities in the country at the time of each decennial census, starting in 1790. It turns out several cities in… Keep reading…

That was all well… Keep reading…

Volunteers will be asked to camp out at a specific location for two hours on February 18th or 20th, counting bikes and peds that pass by. If you are interested in participating, contact bikepedcounts@arlingtonva.us. Keep reading…

Virginia’s answer to DC’s streetcars
Plans for streetcars in DC and along Arlington’s Columbia Pike are well-known around the region, but they’re not the only exciting plans for new surface transit inside the Beltway. Arlington, Alexandria and Fairfax have quietly identified a number of corridors for significantly enhanced transit service. Keep reading…

Top 10 missed Metro stations
What parts of the Washington region ought to have a Metro station, but don’t? I have long maintained that our region should be more open to transit modes other than Metrorail. Metro is great, but with its extremely high price tag and with over a hundred miles of it already in service, what our region needs most now is better network coverage. At this time, a billion dollars would… Keep reading…

Streetcar timing, funding, spacing, bidding
DDOT officials answered questions and provided more information about DC’s streetcar plans at last night’s Columbia Heights streetcar meeting. Keep reading…
