Emails to the Editor Submission Guidelines

What are Emails to the Editor?

Emails to the Editor are short emails that readers submit in response to news/analysis, opinion, or policy pieces published in Greater Greater Washington (these story types are identified by a gray label at the top of the piece). Submissions are reviewed and considered for publication in periodic round-ups.

Please see below for Emails to the Editor guidelines:

  • 150-300 words
  • Directly respond to arguments made or information presented in a news/analysis, policy, or opinion piece, providing an alternative view, additional context, or other insights
  • Include your name and the jurisdiction in which you live. Anonymous submissions or submissions including false identifying information will not be considered. If chosen for publication, your name and jurisdiction will be included.
  • Include your phone number (for internal contact purposes only; not for publication)

Submitting an Email to the Editor does not guarantee that it will be published. We will notify you if your email is selected for publication. Emails selected for publication will be edited for grammar, clarity, and length.

If my email is selected will I be paid?

Emails to the Editor are not paid writing opportunities.

How do I submit an Email to the Editor?

Please email your submission to editor@ggwash.org and include “Email to the Editor” in the subject line.

What if I would like to write more than 300 words?

We welcome opinion pieces of 500-1,000 words in length. We recommend reaching out to us at editor@ggwash.org with a summary of your idea prior to writing and submitting a full piece.

If you’d like to explore paid freelance writer opportunities, read our pitch guidelines.
