In support of the Connecticut Avenue Protected Bike Lane and Traffic Safety Project, Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) and Ward 3 Bicycle Advocates (W3BA) are teaming up with people who live, shop, or work along Connecticut Avenue in Cleveland Park, Woodley Park, Chevy Chase, or Van Ness in order to campaign for improved bike access in the area. They need your help to remind Connecticut Avenue business owners that many of their customers are bikers. The campaign kick off is on Wednesday, September 6. Attend a webinar on traffic safety projects: The National Safety Coalition is hosting a webinar for the Road to Zero Community Traffic Safety grantees to share their 2022 projects with the community. Not only will you have the chance to hear from the grantees about their projects, but you will also get to ask them questions and learn how you might be able to replicate their efforts within your own community. This webinar will feature presentations from Health by Design, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA), and Howard University’s Transportation Research Center and Safe Routes Partnership. Participate in a Fairfax community meeting on Visualize 2050: The planning process for Northern Virginia’s future transportation network is underway as part of the entire National Capital Region’s Long-Range Transportation Plan, Visualize 2050. The Fairfax County Department of Transportation is hosting public meetings for people who want to share their vision for Northern Virginia’s transportation network or who simply want to learn more about Visualize 2050. You will be able to provide feedback on if you support certain projects, any changes you would like to propose to a project, or if you believe there is a project that should be included but is not listed. It’s a 55+ block party: WABA and partners are hosting a block party for those aged 55 or older on Saturday, September 9. This party is both a celebration of the DC area community and a facilitation of conversation about traffic safety in regards to pedestrians, bikers, and drivers alike. You will have the chance to express any concerns or desires you have about street safety in the city. There will be transportation professionals and community leaders speaking throughout the program. Help clean up Montgomery County: Anacostia Riverkeeper and One Montgomery Green are holding a volunteer trash clean up in Silver Spring. This is a great way to connect with others in your community while keeping the area clean! They will provide all necessary equipment, but make sure you wear the appropriate clothes and footwear. Sunday, September 10:

Join in on a community event focused on healthy and active living: Healthy Together Fairfax is an all-ages interactive event put on by the community, for the community. There will be fitness classes, free health screenings, hands-on activities, access to community services and resources, and learning opportunities. You are also free to take a ride on the park’s carousel, play on the playground, or explore the area’s many trails. You can go for fun or you can sign up to volunteer. This event aims to bring health into the community based on community needs and to empower community members to speak up and promote health-related system change. Monday, September 11:

Volunteer at a community garden in Ward 8: Fort Greble Community Garden hosts biweekly volunteer hours on the second and fourth Monday of every month through the end of October. This month, volunteer hours will occur on September 11 and September 28. This is an all ages event—no experience needed. You will learn how to grow your own food and be able to share what is reaped in the community harvest. Activities will vary, but include: weeding, planting, watering, organic pest control, composting, and harvesting. Don’t forget to bring your water bottle, clothes you are okay getting dirty, and your favorite gardening tools! No RSVP needed. Learn more about the event here.

Jacy Heidorn was an Engagement Fellow at GGWash. She grew up in Alstead, New Hampshire before moving to Foggy Bottom in Washington, D.C. to attend undergrad at George Washington University.
