Ride Report is a company that aggreggates rider data from scooter & e-bike-share companies, producing heat maps of where they’re used in cities around the world. Their website offers a fascinating look at where people use these increasingly-common travel modes.

First and foremost, the map itself! The DC map is the main show, with more detailed insets available for Arlington and the University of Maryland.

But the maps are just the beginning. The website offers statistics too.

I learned there are over 4,000 sharable scooters & e-bikes in the DC area on an average day, serving an average of about 9,000 trips per day. In the summer, ridership has peaks as high as 30,000 per day. In the winter, lows are as low as 2,000 rides per day.

You can even compare with other cities. While Ride Report doesn’t have data for every major city, it does have a library for 55, including San Francisco, Atlanta, and Phoenix. No New York or Chicago, much less European or Asian cities.

One big caveat

Ride Report is cool, but does come with the large caveat that not every provider is included. Common providers like Lime, Lyft, Bird, Spin, and others do share their data with the map-makers, but it’s unclear whether every private company from every city on the list is representated. And public providers like Capital Bikeshare seem to be absent completely.

But even if Ride Report isn’t 100% comprehensive, it’s still a cool look at where people use these devices, and offers some basic comparisons to other cities. It’s worth a click!
