DC ballot drop box, 2020 by Ted Eytan licensed under Creative Commons.

DC’s 2022 primaries are coming up quick. And in a place like DC, where more than three quarters of voters are registered Democrats, the primary is awfully likely to determine the results of the general election.

This year, voters will choose DC’s mayor, attorney general, DC Council chair and five councilmembers, as well as the District’s delegate to Congress.

The deadline for nominating petitions to get on the ballot passed last week, and the challenge period ends April 4, meaning we’ll have a final list of names on the ballot soon. A preliminary list was released Monday, according to the Post.

With elections rapidly approaching, now is a good time to mark key election dates and deadlines on your calendar:

May 16: DC begins sending mail-in ballots to every registered voter

May 27: Ballot drop-boxes open

May 31: Register to vote along with your party affiliation by this day to vote in the primaries

June 10-19: Early voting

June 21: Primary election day

The general election will take place November 8.
