Unhoused residents evicted from a Downtown DC park
People experiencing homelessness were evicted from their encampments at Burke Park and nearby Samuel Gompers Memorial Park on Sunday. On Monday the National Park Service, which manages the land, put up fencing. A group of volunteers worked with residents to gather their belongings. This most recent cleanup is part of a series of encampment evictions over the summer. (Meredith Roaten / DCist. Tip: Chester B.)
What happened to DC’s streams?
DC once had a vast network of streams flowing into the Potomac and Anacostia. Now about 70% of those historic streams vanished as the District developed. DC is now funding a project to document and map out the lost waterways and find possible locations to bring some streams back. (Jacob / WAMU)
MoCo parents want students to eat lunch outdoors
As school is set to begin in Montgomery County, some parents and students are urging the school district to have students eat outdoors to avoid unmasked gatherings during the pandemic. MCPS will require that masks be worn in the building, to mitigate the spread of the virus. Some parents have looked at lunchtime as a “loophole” where children have to take off their masks to eat. DC requires vaccines for all health care workers
The District is mandating healthcare workers to take at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine by September 30. The directive applies to all licensed health care professionals, unlicensed health care workers (such as personal care aides and cleaning crews), paramedics, and emergency medical technicians (EMTs), officials said during a press conference Monday. A pedestrian was struck and killed by a driver on the Beltway
A 26-year-old man, from Landover, was killed by a driver during an apparent hit and run on the Beltway in Prince George’s County, according to Maryland state police. James Arthur Jones III was found Monday evening near the Beltway north of US Route 50. Police believe Jones was in a vehicle that crashed, left it, and may have been struck by one or more drivers while trying to cross the Beltway. (Martin Weil / Post. Tip: Chester B.)
Go-go’s history keeps going in new photo collection
About 2,000 images chronicling the history of go-go in DC will be added to the “People’s Archive,” an online platform operated by the DC Public Library system. Photographer Chip Py’s images will be part of the go-go archive, which up until now had mostly news clippings, posters, and transcripts. (Maya Pottige / Washingtonian)
