Deadly crash
An Amtrak train traveling from DC to NYC derailed and crashed yesterday. Six people are dead and dozens more are injured. The NTSB is investigating the cause. Passengers, who included an AP reporter and a former congressman, recounted stories from the scene. The crash was the worst in the Northeast corridor since 1987. (NPR, Post)
A new crossing
Developers broke ground on Capitol Crossing yesterday, which will create three new city blocks above I-395 by 2019. The complex will include 1,100 parking spaces even though it is very close to transit. (DCist)
Land for cash
WMATA is continuing to attempt to sell off land parcels in Brookland to raise cash. Two roughly half acre parcels adjacent to the red line tracks are now for sale, and will likely become residential development. (City Paper)
More ART in Arlington
Arlington County will vote this weekend on building a new facility for ART buses. Currently, the amount of ART service is limited by a lack of space and maintenance facilities. (ArlNow)
Budget updates
Mayor Bowser released a revised budget request, and she backed off of two controversial points. She restored funding for UDC, and removed the FIOA exemption for policy body cameras. (City Paper)
Keep NOVA moving
New research from GMU shows that 60% of the jobs in Northern Virginia are transit-accessible. 14 percent of NOVA residents used transit to get to work in 2013, double the share just thirteen years prior. (Fairfax Times)
Hogan passes laws
Governor Hogan exercised his pen yesterday and signed several bills of note. The “Tesla Bill” allows for the vehicles to be sold traditionally in MD, and the “Uber bill” sets up a regulatory framework for ride-hailing companies. (WBJ, Post)
Costco carmageddon
Pentagon City’s busy Costco recently closed about half their parking lot for construction of a larger development near the store. Neighbors fear that the lot will be reduced to chaos, but there is a large parking garage nearby. (ArlNow)
