“Hanging on to the last vestiges of a car-based economy”
DC Councilmembers Jim Graham, Tommy Wells, and Phil Mendelson had sharp questions for representatives of numerous industry groups at yesterday’s hearing on the parking tax loophole. Clearly coordinated in advance, industry reps from the hotels, universities, hospitals, building owners, Pepco, and even nursing homes and Covenant House (always good to pull the heartstrings… Keep reading…

Testify to close the free-parking tax loophole

But there’s a loophole: if an office gives out free parking, there’s no tax, even though the impact of the cars on the roads and the environment is just as great (or greater, because free… Keep reading…

MoCoCo on library parking: is Don Praisner senile?
The Montgomery County Council is considering ending their subsidy of free parking at libraries which are located in town centers with paid parking. I’m watching the Council hearing on streaming video, and they just got to it. I’m liveblogging it below. Final update: The Council just voted 5-4 for an amendment which essentially guts the proposed resolution entirely. Keep reading…

Park(ing) at Sherman and Park
New Columbia Heights reports on the recent community meeting about parks in the neighborhood. In the center of the block from Lamont to Park and Sherman to 11th is a large open area, currently “used as an illegal dumping and parking area.” Councilmember Graham is working on getting the city to buy the property and forgive back taxes to transfer it to Washington Parks &… Keep reading…
