  • Experts should make technical decisions, not policy

From the WMATA governance debate to the 2030 Group’s transportation report, there’s been a recent push from business groups to convince elected officials to stay away from making decisions and instead leave the policymaking to “experts.” That’s dangerous. If you want to get cable TV, an expert cable installer knows which pieces of equipment…  Keep reading…

  • McDonnell still refusing to push Congress on Metro funding

Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell repeatedly dodged questions yesterday about why he isn’t lobbying his fellow Republicans to save the funds for Metro’s safety repairs. He also showed a surprising ignorance of basic facts like whether WMATA has a permanent General Manager yet, while repeatedly calling for the region to give him power over its decisions. McDonnell…  Keep reading…

The Virginia Senate’s finance commmittee killed three bad transportation-related bills, all of which would have transferred decision-making over transportation in Northern Virginia to Richmond and away from the region’s counties and cities. Governor O’Malley sort-of-confirmed this morning that the WMATA Board is planning to keep on Richard Sarles as permanent General Manager/CEO. While Sarles isn’t what WMATA needs in the long run and might not tackle the bigger, long-term problems, but he could be a good source of stability as WMATA extricates itself from its immediate crises. Both the Riders’…  Keep reading…

Kytja Weir of the Examiner is reporting that WMATA has reached a final decision in its search for a new General Manager.  Adam Tuss of WTOP is speculating that Richard Sarles has been selected to continue leading the transit authority on a permanent basis. Shortly after John Catoe resigned in April of 2010, Sarles took over as interim General Manager.  His tenure thus…  Keep reading…

  • DOT heads to take charge of WMATA governance reform

DDOT, MDOT and VDOT have been planning how to enact some of the recently proposed WMATA governance reforms. The plan highlights a good set of proposals for immediate action, but cuts out Northern Virginia governments in a way that could hurt the region and Metro. The “implementation plan” (PDF) examines the recommendations of the Board of Trade and Riders’ Advisory Council reports…  Keep reading…
