Metro’s leaders don’t have a plan to get riders back. That’s a huge problem.
A Washington Post article published Sunday revealed that Metro leaders don't know how to make the system stop bleeding riders, and don't have a plan to bring them back. When asked how to reverse ridership drop, not a single board member suggested running trains more often, even though there's plenty of evidence that this is what riders want. Keep reading…

Imagine being able to take a train to Great Falls. That was once reality.
Today, the Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) is a paved bicycle trail used for fun and for commuting across Northern Virginia. Of course, the Washington & Old Dominion was originally a railroad — one with a long and convoluted history that helped form communities along it including Dunn Loring, Reston, Herndon, Sterling, and Ashburn. Amtrak’s data could help riders and employees — too bad it’s so hard to find
Amtrak is a valuable resource for the transportation ecosystem – especially in the Northeast – but few people know that. Opening its data could help Amtrak tell its story and provide context for delays and service disruptions, creating transparency that could build support for the system. Metro Reasons: Two train cars pulled apart on the Silver Line on Saturday
A Silver Line train experienced a “pull apart” Saturday morning on August 25 after leaving the McLean rail station headed inbound to Foggy Bottom. The trailing three cars on the train separated from the lead five, causing the train to become disabled and leading to hours of single-tracking as Metro employees worked to move the train to a rail yard. Keep reading…

Metro Reasons: All 7000-series railcars have to be cycled out for repairs
All 564 7000-series railcars on Metro property have wiring defects and need to be inspected and repaired, according to a Metro report recently published online. The agency will have to cycle every car out temporarily while crews perform the work, though Metro says that won’t impact rail service. Keep reading…

Some Anne Arundel County residents want to shut down their light rail. Again.
Some residents in Anne Arundel County are pushing to close light rail stations that run in their communities to Baltimore. (No, this isn't an old post from 2011. Or from 1994.) Closure proponents claim they're concerned about crime from light rail riders, but there's no evidence of increased crime in the area, from the train or otherwise. Keep reading…

People are outraged the proposed Potomac Yard Metro station is losing an entrance
The City of Alexandria is scaling down plans for the Potomac Yard Metro station, which is currently under construction, because the $320 million project is over budget. Under the new plans the south entrance will be removed, cancelling access from East Glebe Road and removing two ramps, a bicycle and pedestrian bridge, and park improvements. Keep reading…

Metro Reasons: Metro’s bus and rail ridership has taken a dive
Metrorail ridership is down 1.2% and Metrobus ridership is down a whopping 9.4% when comparing the first nine months of the current fiscal year and the last. This, according to newly-released documents, is what the agency faces as it closes out Fiscal Year 2018 and heads into 2019 which starts in July. Keep reading…
