What would make Connecticut Avenue safer for pedestrians?
Bulb-outs, elimination of slip lanes, introduction of Leading Pedestrian Intervals, left-turn restrictions, raised crosswalks and improved visibility at crosswalks are some of the many pedestrian safety recommendations from a recent audit of upper Connecticut Avenue. IONA Senior Services and Murch Elementary’s Safe Routes to School Program partnered to create… Keep reading…

VDOT was supposed to install signal where pedestrian killed
A traffic signal and crosswalk was already planned for Virginia Route 234 at the very spot a man was killed yesterday. The signal had been promised for spring 2010, but hasn’t yet been installed. The man was crossing between a McDonald’s and a commuter bus lot near Route 1 in Dumfries where Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission (PRTC) buses travel to… Keep reading…

The southern side of U Street’s 1300 block is a busy one. In addition to the regular heavy foot traffic on U Street, this particular block leads up to the Metro station entrance. Keep reading…

Would Fenty do a better job if he did nothing at all?
Many people speculated, incorrectly, about my motivations for writing an article suspicious of Adrian Fenty on Friday. The simple fact is this. By all rights, I should love Adrian Fenty. He’s aligned with me on most policy issues. However, I don’t love him. Why? Maybe it’s the way he seems to show contempt for the legislature, even when they try to work with… Keep reading…

Does Fenty believe enough in our issues? Does it matter?
Adrian Fenty has aggressively reformed education, made the city more walkable and bikeable, added housing, attacked crime and more. He’s hired some great people (and some not so great people). Does he deserve reelection on that basis? One nagging thought in my mind is whether the Mayor’s support for Smart Growth or sustainable transportation is really heartfelt… Keep reading…
