Montgomery removing one useless underpass while planning another
Montgomery County will likely remove a dangerous, unused pedestrian tunnel in the 1960s planned community of Montgomery Village. Redevelopment along the road will create a more walkable retail center, and planners hope to replace the tunnel with a safe and lively pedestrian crossing. At the same time, county leaders seem to be pushing ahead with a pedestrian underpass at Medical… Keep reading…

Gaithersbungle, part 3: What else can you get for $3.8 billion?
The Montgomery County Planning Board staff endorsed a $3.8 billion widening of I-270 all the way to Frederick County, a move which would fuel sprawl way up in the county’s preserved farmland areas. What else could we do with $3.8 billion to improve the corridor even more? Keep reading…

Gaithersbungle, part 2: Old, tired formulas generate old, disastrous solutions
The Montgomery Planning Department just recommended widening I-270 between Rockville and Clarksburg to 12 lanes, and adding two new lanes north of Clarksburg. The project would cost $3.8 billion, and would be a disastrous move for the County. Arlington and Alexandria, through which the lanes will pass, aren’t so sure, and claim VDOT hasn’t provided answers to their questions about the impact or benefits of the lanes. As a result, they are taking formal steps to oppose the plan. Keep reading…

TPB creates more extensive yet sprawlier BRT map
Yesterday, we discussed the BRT proposal from the Transportation Planning Board that would apply for a stimulus grant to construct a beginning network of Bus Rapid Transit routes in the region. Dan posted in the comments that the committee had already expanded the map to contain a variety of corridors, which they will then whittle down to an initial network for the stimulus grant application. Here’s… Keep reading…

ACT produces District 4 scorecard
Voters in Montgomery County’s District 4 will choose Democratic and Republican nominees for County Council on Tuesday. On the Democratic side, Nancy Navarro and Ben Kramer are considered the front-runners, and are also the candidates most in favor of transit and transit-oriented growth in Montgomery County. Navarro pulls slightly ahead of Kramer on our issues. All Republicans… Keep reading…
