  • Planners propose regional BRT system

A committee of the Transportation Planning Board has developed a Bus Rapid Transit network proposal spanning the entire region, from Laurel to Lorton. Regional leaders hope to submit this concept for the competitive grants authorized under the stimulus (ARRA) bill. This network would make a start toward improving transit on key regional routes in need of better transit service,…  Keep reading…

  • Bus frequency map

Planners at the Transportation Planning Board created this map showing all bus routes in the region and their headways. Darker, greener lines represent segments which have the greatest frequency of buses, down to the thin red segments with the lowest frequency. If multiple services run on the same road, that segment’s weight reflects the combined headway between all services.  Keep reading…

Whenever a local government makes a decision, some people are inevitably disappointed or even upset. When the disappointed people are drivers, Post reporter Eric Weiss is there to defend them with an article about how drivers and non-drivers are at “war” or “inflamed.”   Keep reading…

  • Breakfast links: take the train, save a life

New commute stats: A recent MWCOG survey discovered that one-third of residents of DC, Arlington and Alexandria take transit to work, and ten percent walk. Region-wide, five percent take transit and seven percent walk.  Keep reading…

  • K Street Transitway delayed seven years, again

DC has a plan on the books to reconfigure K Street, creating a dedicated, physically separated bus lane in each direction. The original “K Street Transitway” study happened in 2004, but there’s been little to no progress since. DC Councilmembers including Jim Graham periodically ask about it, and the Downtown BID thinks it’s a high priority, but there’s…  Keep reading…

  • TPB: VPL + BRT = A-OK?

A few months ago, the Transportation Policy Board of MWCOG proposed “Variably Priced Lanes” on major highways throughout the region. A cross between congestion pricing and HOT lanes (depending on whether the entire road or part of the road would be “variably priced”), this would generate considerable revenue and speed commutes, imposing the cost of…  Keep reading…
