A deputy mayor on the WMATA board could improve DC and Metro coordination
Lucinda Babers, DC’s Deputy Mayor for Operations and Infrastructure, will join the WMATA Board of Directors, Fenit Nirappil reported in the Washington Post over the weekend. In addition to Babers’ strong qualifications, having a deputy mayor sit directly on the board could help better coordinate transportation policies, avoiding the kind of situation that turned a well-meaning effort to make Circulator free into a controversy over equity. Maryland toll lanes won’t ease traffic, critics say
The Hogan administration is moving ahead with plans to construct new toll lanes on I-270 and the Capital Beltway in Maryland, while Virginia Governor Northam inked a deal to expand the state's toll lanes as well. A group of Maryland legislators wants to reform Metro. Here’s their plan.
Last week, a group of Maryland state legislators introduced a plan for overhauling Metro. Among the changes in the proposal: WMATA’s Board of Directors would be limited to one appointee from each jurisdiction, the Inspector General’s office would have more power, the Rider's Advisory Council would have a greater voice, and a dedicated funding source for Metro would be mandatory. Devika Gunasekere, age 67, was killed on January 5, 2016. The Rockville resident was on her way to work at a child development center on a clear, sunny morning in Bethesda.
