Car-centric and walkable instincts vie within evolving Thomas
As society’s view of the shape of our communities and the role of our streets has shifted, so have the views of our elected officials. In the 1920s, a public debate over the role of cars dedicated streets to cars alone. Communities passed laws mandating the suburban form of development. Today, we’re reevaluating those decisions and their negative consequences, and with… Keep reading…

Breakfast links: on and on and on
Columbia Pike streetcar gets design money: Arlington has approved funding to design and plan a Columbia Pike streetcar. This $3 million will let the county work on figuring out how to come up with the rest of the money they need to actually build the thing. (How about having VDOT use more transportation dollars for streetcars instead of all highways all the time?) P.S. I call on all DC… Keep reading…

The residents had not known about any tree removal, nor had the local ANC commissioners. The blocks had already lost several mature trees in recent years, and residents worried about losing more. What’s “passive green space”?
The DC Council’s Committee of the Whole approved the Brookland Small Area Plan this morning. Technically, they just placed a resolution on the calendar to approve the plan, with some comments; the full Council will vote on the plan later today. However, after this vote, final passage is overwhelmingly likely. Update: The plan passed unanimously. Keep reading…
