DC begins removing old streetcar tracks
DC has begun a project to rehab and replace the streetcar tracks on O and P Streets in Georgetown. DDOT will pull up all the cobblestones (technically Belgian blocks), tracks, and the yokes that support them. They will then reposition the yokes lower to be better aligned with the street grade, which has eroded a lot over the years. Once that’s completed, they’ll reposition… Keep reading…

Improve campus life to fix Georgetown town-gown relations
The Office of Planning’s recent recommendation to require Georgetown University to house 100 percent of undergraduates on campus would both severely damage Georgetown student life and fail to achieve the campus plan opponents’ objectives. A better approach would be to make campus a more desirable place to be. If Georgetown improved student gathering spaces,… Keep reading…

Georgetown businesses and residents don’t support Evans’ parking meter rollback proposal
Councilmember Jack Evans says he wants to roll back parking meter rates and hours of enforcement in commercial corridors, including Georgetown, because of complaints from businesses and residents in his ward. But after speaking to organizations representing residents and businesses in Georgetown, I found no support for Evans’ proposal. The proposal passed out of… Keep reading…

Georgetown U needs to manage transportation demand
DDOT rejected Georgetown University’s campus plan last week, citing its lack of an aggressive transportation demand management plan. While we are not in agreement about the Office of Planning’s call for on-campus housing for 100% of undergraduates, we are in agreement that GU could make a much more aggressive investment in transit. We believe that Georgetown… Keep reading…

Evans would spend millions making parking and traffic worse
Councilmember Jack Evans is trying to repeal almost all proposed tax increases in DC’s budget, as expected. On top of that, he wants to spend $5.2 million to make parking cheaper or free in the busiest areas. This may seem like a boon for those who park in these areas, but it’s not. Traffic will get worse and it’ll become harder to park, not easier. Evans’… Keep reading…

OP wants 100% of GU undergrads on campus by 2016
Yesterday, the Office of Planning issued its report on Georgetown University’s ten year campus plan. It recommends some severe and surprising restrictions on the university, including a demand that GU house 100% of undergraduates on campus by the fall of 2016. GU’s proposed campus plan would cap its traditional undergraduate enrollment at 6,652. In addition,… Keep reading…

Georgetown restaurants not threatened by chains
Some people have lamented that the new Paul Bakery restaurant that is to open next to the Banana Republic in Georgetown is a chain. While it’s fair to complain about the lack of genuinely exciting or even interesting restaurants in Georgetown, one of the things Georgetown’s definitely not is chain-dominated. As of my latest count, there are 126 restaurants in… Keep reading…
