Needed: leadership and management at DDOT
If there’s one constant among DC neighborhood activists and officials, it’s that everybody complains about DDOT. Part of this is inherent in being the transportation agency: as Chris Ziemann said at Wednesday’s Dupont ANC meeting, everyone is a consumer of DDOT’s product, the streets. Keep reading…

18th Street Dupont reconstruction off?
I’ve heard from a source that the reconstruction of 18th Street in Dupont is now postponed to 2011. Maybe DDOT swapped its priority with that of 18th Street in Adams Morgan? Keep reading…

Crossable intersections in Adams Morgan
Adams Morgan has many more pedestrians than cars. But its major intersections have wide turns and slip lanes that speed traffic while making crossing difficult. Keep reading…

Is Chevy Chase’s anti-pedestrianism DDOT’s fault?
Richard Layman posts a letter from “Sue” claiming that “DDOT is eager to prove that ANCs are killing street life because DDOT constantly encounters ANC resistance” to projects like the drive-through Commerce Bank on Wisconsin, and “If a simple permit of the kind P&P needs to put its bench back out is a bureaucratic nightmare to get, is that Winstead’s… Keep reading…

Union Station Intermodal meeting recap
Dan from BeyondDC, Ralph of Sierra Club DC, reader Steve P., and many others attended the Union Station Intermodal Transportation Center public meeting last night. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, who secured the three Federal earmarks that are paying for this project, spoke briefly about the many years she’s been working on this in Congress. Union Station was once “a… Keep reading…

One-way schizophrenia from DDOT
I’m confused by DDOT. With one hand, they propose changing one-way 15th Street in Logan Circle into two-way, which is a very good idea (some reasons and some more. From that it seems that DDOT understands how making cars move faster through our neighborhoods doesn’t actually improve the quality of life. Keep reading…

A better 14th Street coming soon
Last week was the latest public meeting to review the proposed streetscape improvements to 14th Street, from Florida Avenue to Thomas Circle. I wasn’t able to make the meeting, which conflicted with the Columbia Heights parking meeting, but I was able to get copies of the presentation. This street is becoming a major restaurant and bar corridor, and improvements that make… Keep reading…

Performance parking coming to Columbia Heights
In Columbia Heights, only 25% of residents own cars. With a Metro station and numerous bus lines, bike lanes and Zipcars, it’s a neighborhood conducive to car non-ownership. But if you were at the public meeting on Tuesday night to discuss proposed changes to parking policy, you might think that 75% of residents drive every day, and the other 25% work for smart growth or bicycle… Keep reading…

Are protected bike lanes actually more dangerous?
New York has its first physically separated bike lane on 9th Avenue, where the parked cars sit between the bike land and traffic, protecting riders. I emailed DDOT’s Chris Ziemann about the 15th Street reconfiguration, suggesting a similar lane there. Ziemann responded that “separating the bikes from traffic is safer for bikes along the block, but much more dangerous… Keep reading…
