Electronic displays at bus stops, more dedicated bus lanes, bus priority at traffic signals, a new express bus route, and more improvements are all on the way, according to representatives from DDOT and WMATA. At a forum last week hosted by the Coalition for Smarter Growth, DDOT Associate Director for Policy, Planning and Sustainability Karina Ricks revealed a host of exciting… Keep reading…

“Woodies,” the sentimental favorite
For many longtime Washington residents, The Woodward & Lothrop department store, or Woodies as everybody knew it, is a touchstone for memories of easier days and simpler pleasures when Washington was much younger. The looming 9-story building at 11th and F Streets, NW, taking up virtually an entire block in the heart of old downtown, served as the stage for many happy moments… Keep reading…

DC slow to distribute cash-for-appliances
A popular feature of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act is the rebate program for purchases of energy-efficient appliances. I was particularly excited about the program when my kitchen suffered serious water damage from Snowmageddon this past January. “What a great time to replace our appliances,” I said to my wife and son, “since we can… Keep reading…

Also, the Board of Trade and MWCOG will release their report on WMATA governance this morning. It should be interesting to see what the group, co-chaired by DC Council Chair-elect Kwame Brown, has signed on to. Continuing our discussion of the RAC report on… Keep reading…

Orange objects to a fairer special election process
DCDSC National Committeeman Vincent Orange, a presumptive leader in the race to fill Kwame Brown’s to-be-vacated at-large council seat, is drawing battle lines around any proposals to amend the Home Rule Act or convince the DSDSC to appoint a caretaker. In an e-mail to committee members, Orange suggests that the Democratic party is being targeted unfairly. He… Keep reading…

Can we eliminate death and serious injury from roadways?
After nine passengers died on the Red Line in 2009, we didn’t throw up our hands and chalk it up to issues beyond our control. Instead, the region has seen serious debate and action — however imperfect — to ensure that no one is killed or seriously injured while riding Metro. Why, then, do we take a more defeatist attitude toward the safety of our roadways? Why do… Keep reading…
