No, DC is not going to be like Paris
Supporters of DC’s height limit say restricting building heights has worked to keep Paris beautiful. But embracing the Parisian built form would have unintended consequences on DC’s neighborhoods. The mid-rise Paris that we know today was built not by a democracy, but by a mad emperor and his bulldozer-wielding prefect. As Office of Planning director Harriet… Keep reading…

Please don’t be a jerk on a bike on sidewalks and ramps
Now that I have a baby, I’ve been pushing a stroller around DC sidewalks quite a lot. Our neighborhoods are great for walking and give our baby plenty to look at and experience. The only drawbacks are too-narrow sidewalks in some places (I’m looking at you, 17th Street in Dupont) and the occasional impolite operator of some kind of vehicle. The waters are rising on housing unaffordability
As housing demand continues to outstrip supply, housing prices keep rising in neighborhoods where lower-income renters and seniors on fixed incomes can ill afford the extra cost. DC’s zoning update could help make a small dent in this problem, just as a single environmental protection can slightly blunt climate change. But that will only happen if the zoning update doesn’t… Keep reading…

I will continue to ride, bent frame and all
I started biking in DC to become a moving, breathing part of the city. But Monday morning, while in the center bike lane on Pennsylvania Avenue between 7th and 9th streets, a driver made an illegal U-turn straight into my bike. I feel compelled to say I was obeying all laws and going the speed limit when I was hit. I catapulted into the side of her car, was jostled off my bike and… Keep reading…
