Cyclists have long been asking for a safer Pennsylvania Avenue. It’s coming next month.
The stretch of Pennsylvania Avenue between 13th and 15th Street NW is particularly dangerous for cyclists because it doesn’t have barriers to stop drivers from making illegal U-turns across the median bikeway. Rhode Island Ave could get a huge new housing complex. Will it make the area more walkable?
A Big Lots and Forman Mills currently sit on the huge swath of land on Rhode Island Avenue NE, next to the Metro station. Soon, that same land may be home to a 1,550-unit housing development with retail stores on the ground floor of all of its buildings. Keep reading…

The feds to WMATA: You’ve got big problems, and you have to fix them
The Federal Transit Administration came down hard on WMATA today, deeming the agency deficient in both how it manages itself on the whole and, more specifically, how it operates its trains and buses. As a result, WMATA will need to make some serious changes, and fast. System-wide, FTA inspectors cited 54 overall safety violations: 44 for Metrorail and 10 for Metrobus.
