Ward 3 parking vision

The Ward 3 Vision community group, which is affiliated with the Coalition for Smarter Growth, has a page up about parking management in residential areas, including flyers and powerpoints about the issue. This is in response to the ongoing debate over visitor passes in Cleveland Park.

They also link to a good page from San Francisco’s Livable City about reforming parking, including this nice chart of old and new thinking:

Parking is a social good Parking is not an entitlement
More parking is always better Often, less is better
Parking demand is fixed parking demand is elastic
Governments should establish minimum parking requirements Government should establish maximum parking ratios
Parking costs should be bundled into the cost of housing, goods, and services Parking costs should be unbundled
Parking is a burden to government, competing with other priorities for resources Parking is a source of revenue for government, and can fund other city priorities
Parking should be priced to encourage full utilization Parking should be priced so as to create some available spaces at most times.
