This Wednesday, we’re hiding from the heat and making space for planners, advocates, and other community leaders of color to meet and connect. We’ll be hosting a meet-up on July 17 from 6:00 - 8:00 at Shanklin Hall, a Black-owned gathering space on 18th Street.

You don’t need to be an urban planner to attend, just share our vision of a Washington region where housing is abundant and affordable, it’s safe and easy to get around without a car, and land use decisions prioritize racial, social, and environmental justice. RSVP here.

Tuesday, July 16:

Attend a Homebuyer Education Seminar: In these workshops with the Latino Economic Development Center, you will learn how to navigate the process of buying a home in Maryland, including areas such as Montgomery and Prince George’s County, and how to get a good mortgage. You will also learn how your credit history, personal budget, and personal finances may affect your future success. LEDC invites different experts including a loan officer, home inspector, real estate agent, and insurance agent to explain the different areas of the home-buying process.

This class is provided virtually via Zoom in two parts in both English and Spanish. By registering for this class you agree to participate in both sessions. Your absence from one of the sessions will result in a rescheduling which will delay your eligibility to obtain the certificate that will allow you to qualify for special programs for first-time homebuyers. The individual counseling session AFTER the class is a requirement to receive your homebuyer education certificate. More info here.

Wednesday, July 17:

Expand your understanding of spatial justice: Join Housing Matters, an Urban Institute initiative, for their webinar this Wednesday! As communities develop reparative spatial justice strategies that reckon with, repair, and transform the racist foundations of land and housing policies in the United States, we are reminded that it is essential that we decommodify, rematriate, and increase accessibility to land for Indigenous, Black, and POC communities. This webinar, featuring the Center for Ethical Land Transition, discusses how communities, funders, and landowners can work to transition land out of the speculative market and into collective stewardship, so that we may all deepen our relationships to land and upend the logics of dispossession that underpin our property system.
