Breakfast links: DC Zoning Commission advances density increase on U Street
DC Zoning Commission advances map amendment to increase density at 1617 U Street NW
On Thursday, July 11, the Zoning Commission voted unanimously to advance a map amendment that would allow medium- to high-density development on a portion of a U Street property currently owned by the District government. The Commission’s vote sends the proposal to the National Capital Planning Commission before returning to the Zoning Commission for final approval later this year. Expert confirms Arlington County’s sewage system can handle Missing Middle density increases
The chief support engineer at Arlington County Water Sewer Streets said during the Missing Middle civil trial that the county’s sewer system could support the modest growth the zoning ordinance would bring. Since water usage in the county has declined since 1998, the system has historically handled substantially higher water and sewage demand. Arlington would need to add over 8,000 households just to meet 2008 levels of demand. (Daniel Egitto / ARLNow)
NVTA funds will support a mix of lane-widening, multimodal projects for Fairfax County
The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority will give Fairfax County $362.8 million to expand Frontier Drive, add lanes along a one-mile stretch of Route 7 between I-495 and I-66 to accommodate future bus rapid transit service, and complete several other transportation projects. The county received less than the $587.2 million it applied for. (Angela Woolsey / FFXNow)
WMATA closes comment period for the Better Bus Network
The public comment period for WMATA’s Better Bus Network Redesign ended on Monday, July 15. Proposed changes include overhauling the route naming system, extending weekend and late-night service, and increasing bus service on popular routes. However, because WMATA is not increasing the budget for bus service, the new system will include tradeoffs like removing service for some neighborhoods and reducing peak-time service in favor of weekend and daytime hours. The WMATA Board of Directors will vote on a final plan this fall. (Disclosure: Dr. Tracy Hadden Loh serves on the WMATA Board of Directors and is secretary of GGWash’s Board of Directors.)
