Monday, July 1:

GGWash 2024 Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner candidate training: In November 2024, voters in Washington, DC, will choose their most hyper-local elected officials: Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners. ANC seats are unpaid, part-time, nonpartisan, advisory roles, and are the official voice of their neighborhoods. There are 46 Advisory Neighborhood Commissions in the District, made up of 345 commissioners representing single-member districts of about 2,000 people.

Join GGWash for a virtual training on how to run for ANC, and for a discussion on how to serve if you’re elected. Though GGWash will endorse in ANC elections, attending this training is not a requirement to be endorsed by us. Anyone interested in running for an ANC seat is welcome to attend; alignment with GGWash’s stances on housing, transportation, and land use is not necessary. Sign up for the virtual training here.

Tuesday, June 25:

WIN: Envisioning thriving communities today, and looking ahead: How is racial and economic displacement shaping the Ward 3 we live in today? What might it look like for Ward 3 to shift that exclusionary trajectory? This panel will explore creating a positive vision of the future for Ward 3–one that will compete with negative narratives, and highlight a potential path for creating change.

Panel members include Rev. William H. Lamar IV, Metropolitan AME Church; Anthony E. Cook, professor of law, Georgetown University; Erica Williams, executive director, DC Fiscal Policy Institute; and Alison Dunn-Almaguer, executive director, Washington Interfaith Network.

Capital Brutalism exhibit @ National Building Museum: Looking for something else to do this week? Check out the National Building Museum’s Capital Brutalism exhibit, on view until February, 2025. Capital Brutalism explores the history, current state, and future of seven polarizing buildings and the WMATA Metro system in Washington, D.C. The exhibition uses archival documents, drawings, construction photographs, architectural models, and contemporary photographs to provide context and shed light on the buildings’ stories.
