At 4:00pm — Tuesday, January 16 — Brookings Metro will host Henry Grabar, a staff writer at Slate, for a discussion on how American cities can evolve their approaches to parking and, in the process, build more inclusive and sustainable neighborhoods. Grabar will talk about his recent book, “Paved Paradise,” in which he details how the country designed itself into this situation—and features stories from many of the leaders who are trying to design a way out. Tuesday, January 16:

Celebrate a triumph for Montgomery County: On Tuesday, a Montgomery County Council parking reform bill (Zoning Text Amendment 23-10) to increase housing supply near transit will be officially introduced with unanimous council support. To celebrate, join Montgomery for All for a happy hour at World of Beer to socialize with those excited about the positive changes that the new legislation will bring and to show your support for the bill. Wednesday, January 17:

Support local students’ call for a Green New Deal for Schools: Join the School Without Walls hub of the Sunrise Movement at the Board of Education Public meeting this Wednesday to show support for a Green New Deal for Schools resolution passed by the DC State Board of Education. Written by students, the resolution includes five demands: sustainable infrastructure, free and healthy meals, comprehensive climate curricula, climate disaster plans, and pathways to the sustainable workforce. After the meeting around 6:30, a vote will take place on the resolution and the students are looking to fill the room with supportive attendees. If at all available, stop by and help push for a Green New Deal for Schools and get a sticker too. Learn more and RSVP here.

Learn about the future of Oxon Run Stream: The Department of Energy and Environment is organizing a space for the community to express their ideas for the future of Oxon Run Park & Stream. The Oxon Run Stream Restoration Project is currently in its design phase and set to begin the construction phase in 2027. Join a public meeting on e-bike expansion: In March 2023, Capital Bikeshare launched their electric bicycles in Fairfax County, Arlington, and DC. There are approximately 7o bike stations located around Merrifield, Reston, and Tysons with Bikeshare looking to add 40 more. The Fairfax County Department of Transit is hosting a meeting to discuss the current plan to expand the Capital Bikeshare network in the Mount Vernon District. Learn more here.
