The National Institute for Congestion Reduction (NICR) is hosting a webinar on Thursday, October 19th at 12:00 pm to discuss opportunities for equitable travel demand management strategies (TDM). NICR will be introducing their TDM strategy that works to tackle traffic congestion and air pollution through ride-matching and parking management systems. Learn about their focus on equity through their approach and get an inside peek on NICR’s efforts to implement a prototype of their proposed management strategy at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez. Discuss the DC Streetcar Extension: Join panelists T&E chairperson councilmember Charles Allen and DDOT Interim Director Sharon Kershbaum for a conversation about the defunding of the streetcar extension and what is next for the project. Learn how to grow your own food: The College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability, and Environmental Sciences at the University of the District of Columbia has a variety of food hubs around the district. This month, the P.R. Harris Urban Food Hub is running a workshop dedicated to increasing the presence of hydroponics in urban settings. On October 20 from 9:00 am to 10:30 am, they are hosting an introduction to growing and maintaining your own produce in a soil-less environment. This event also includes a tour of the P.R. Volunteer for MCDOT’s Bike Donation: Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is celebrating community service month by collecting donated bikes from the community. They are looking for volunteers to help receive and accept the bike donations and will provide all tools necessary to store the bikes correctly. The event is on Friday, October 20 from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm, and volunteering time slots are available throughout the day at 2.5 hour intervals. Learn more & RSVP here.

Ride around Ward 8: The Fresh Wind Community Development Corporation is leading a 10 mile bike ride this Saturday, October 21 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Explore Ward 8 with a group of avid bike riders and take in the views. This bike ride is a great way to start your weekend and enjoy some of the last warmer days of the year. Tackle trash pollution in the Potomac River: Volunteers of all ages are welcome to join the Potomac Riverkeeper Network in cleaning up the watershed on Saturday, October 21 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Potomac Riverkeeper Network has been organizing cleanup events since May, and October is the last month the cleanups will be running before the weather gets cold. At this event, volunteers will walk the shoreline to remove single-use plastics and trash. All are welcome, just make sure to sign the waiver before coming to the event and be sure to bring water and wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little muddy. Learn more & RSVP here.
