GGWash Spring Gala 2022 by Ericka Hume used with permission.

Ticket sales for the GGWash Spring Soirée end on Wednesday! Don’t miss out on your chance to celebrate 15 years of GGWash, connect with people from across the Washington region who are passionate about making our communities greater, toast to regional wins, and dream big about what’s next.

We have so much to celebrate. Just look around our city and our region — new bike lanes, new zoning, new transit facilities and policies, even solar panels in historic districts! The last 15 years have been incredible, but there is more work to do. Every day, we’re working toward the vision of this region as a place where housing is abundant and affordable and it’s safe and easy to get around without a car; a region where land use, housing, and transportation decisions advance racial, social, and environmental justice.

Join us at our Spring Soirée on Thursday, April 27, 2023, at Hook Hall.

Hurry! Ticket sales close at the end of the day Wednesday, April 26. Learn more and purchase tickets here.

Wednesday, April 26:

Discuss the barriers and strategies to preserving affordable housing in rural America: Underproduction and housing scarcity now impact nearly every community in the United States, including more rural or exurban communities. However, the problems faced by less dense municipalities are very different from those faced by urban centers. With a focus on preserving affordable housing and combating blight, rural communities often have difficulty attracting the investment necessary to manage and maintain their housing stock.

Join Up for Growth and a panel of experts to discuss how rural communities are working to solve their housing crisis and the unique barriers they face. Learn more about the webinar and register to attend here.

Learn about the land use history of Reno City and how students hope to memorialize the historical site: Reno City was a town and then neighborhood in NW Washington, DC, that existed from the 1860s into the mid-twentieth century on land that is now part of Rock Creek Park. The predominantly Black neighborhood was eventually cleared to make way for Fort Reno Park and Alice Deal Middle School. For the past few years, students from Jackson Reed High School have worked with local historian Neil Flanagan to investigate the history of Reno City.

Join the Rock Creek Conservancy and Jackson Reed HS students in exploring the importance of Reno City and ideas for how they would like to see the historical site memorialized. Learn more about the event and register to attend here.

Learn how the transportation industry can prevent human trafficking: Human trafficking is the fastest-growing organized crime, and like any business, trafficking relies on the transportation network—to recruit, move, or transfer their victims and to move goods produced by forced labor. The transportation industry plays a critical role in preventing and combating human trafficking and providing access for many survivors trying to leave their trafficking situation and obtain aid to rebuild their lives.

Join the Mineta Transportation Institute on Thursday, April 27 from 1:00 to 2:00 PM (ET) for a panel discussion to showcase efforts to combat this issue in the United States. Discussions will include the role of transportation agencies in facilitating effective prevention training programs and increasing accurate victim identification, as well as putting in place survivor-centered and trauma-informed response protocols.
