Potomac Yard Metro station will open on May 19
Metro’s 98th station, Potomac Yard, will open on May 19. The station is a long-planned infill station that was originally set to open in April 2022. While several developments are already in progress, area leaders are expecting the station to catalyze even more development, with current estimates of 13,000 new residents and 26,000 new jobs. Washington region rents in amenity-rich buildings seem to be moderating
Apartments in Class A buildings in the Washington region (defined roughly as buildings built after 1991 with lots of built-in amenities) saw rental rates moderate more in the first quarter of 2023 compared with previous years. Buildings in Alexandria saw the highest percent increase in rents since 2022 at 4.1%, while similar buildings in other neighborhoods, including Rockville/North Bethesda, Crystal City, Capitol Hill/Navy Yard, and Silver Spring experienced average rent increases of less than 3% (UrbanTurf)
U.S. House passes resolution to halt DC police reform bill
The U.S. House of Representatives has voted to overturn DC’s police reform bill. President Biden has stated he will veto the measure. Earlier this year, Congress successfully blocked a DC criminal code reform bill. Mayor Muriel Bowser will soon testify at a House oversight hearing on crime, homelessness, and city finances. (DCist)
Gaithersburg City Council approves Lakeforest Mall redevelopment plan

Shirlington pedestrian bridge expected to get green light from Arlington County Board
The Arlington County Board will vote on a contract to start construction on the Shirlington Road pedestrian bridge across Four Mile Run. If construction starts upon approval, the bridge should open in 2024 and enhance bicycle and pedestrian safety in the area. (Matt Blitz / ARLNow)
Bowser hopes University of Southern California DC campus will help revitalize downtown
The University of Southern California announced it will open a new campus in the former National Association of Broadcasters building a couple of blocks from the south side of Dupont Circle. The university projects that the campus will bring 1,000 students to DC each semester. This is in line with Mayor Muriel Bowser’s “comeback plan” for downtown to attract satellite campuses from universities around the country. (Michael Brice-Saddler / Washington Post)
