Carter Barron Spring Cleaning, 2022 by Rock Creek Conservancy used with permission.

Rock Creek Park is fortunate to house a spectacular, approximately 4,000-seat, outdoor amphitheater that, from 1950 to 2017, brought the Washington DC community together to celebrate the confluence of urban outdoors, wilderness, and the performing arts, from popular music to Shakespeare. Due to structural issues and long-term rehabilitation needs, the amphitheater has lain dormant for the past 5 years.

A panel discussion entitled “Race, History and Rock Creek: The History and Future of the Carter Barron Amphitheater” will be held on Wednesday, November 30 from 5:30-7:00 pm. National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA)’s Alan Spears and community leader Donna Potts will discuss their perspectives. Tony Richardson, leader of the Carter Barron Alliance at the Conservancy, will moderate, and National Park Service (NPS) staff will share their vision for the future of the amphitheater. This is a virtual event, and all registrants will receive the zoom link 24 hours before the event begins. Register for the event here.

Provide input on the Bladensburg Road Multimodal Safety and Access Study: The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is conducting a multimodal (e.g., vehicle, bus, bicycle, and pedestrian) transportation study of Bladensburg Road, NE between Benning Road and Eastern Avenue. The study will identify traffic safety and access issues and develop solutions to improve safety and access for all users, especially pedestrians and bicyclists. The project will develop two corridor alternatives and evaluation metrics to help the community and DDOT weigh the tradeoffs and select a preferred alternative to take to 30% design. The study area is approximately 2.5 miles in length and includes all of Bladensburg Road between Benning Road, NE and Eastern Avenue, NE (the District-Maryland line).

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) wants to hear from residents that live, work, and commute on Bladensburg Road, NE between Benning Road, NE, and Eastern Avenue. This Open House, held at the US National Arboretum at 9:00 am on Saturday, December 3, will allow the public to review design concepts and provide feedback to DDOT.
