The much-anticipated construction of the 16th Street NW bus lanes, which will run between H Street NW and Arkansas Avenue NW, is expected to start sometime this year. The project would prioritize buses on one of the busiest corridors in the District. Currently, more than 20,000 riders take buses along 16th Street NW, according to the District Department of Transportation’s website. But it’s slow in parts, and congested in others, and getting across certain streets can be difficult. These lanes would go a long way in making riders’ commutes quicker, and safer.

Until then, however, DDOT recently released some preliminary designs, showing where the bus striping would go. The solid red lines with the “X” inside indicate a bus stop detail, while the red and white lines show a “bus only” am or pm detail. These designs only show a portion of the bus lane south of M Street. But the bus lane will reach all the way to Arkansas Avenue NW. Take a look.
