Join us tomorrow night from 6 to 8 pm for a special happy hour at Kaldi's Social House, located at 918 Silver Spring Avenue in downtown Silver Spring.

This happy hour is also a birthday party for Just Up The Pike, a blog that Dan Reed started in 2006 as a way to celebrate eastern Montgomery County and talk about the issues facing this evolving, sort-of suburban, sort-of urban place.

Kaldi's Social House is an eight-minute walk from the Silver Spring Metro station (Red Line), as well as dozens of Metrobus and Ride On routes (if you're coming from DC, you can take the 70/79 and S2/S4/S9.) There's a Capital Bikeshare stations two blocks away at Ripley and Bonifant streets. If you’re driving, there’s free parking after 7 pm on the street and in the public garage in back.

Want to join us? RSVP here! And keep an eye out for our September happy hour, when we'll be heading to Park View.

Also, check out these other great events happening this week and next.

Now through August 21: Take the Visualize 2045 survey and help transportation planners understand how residents travel throughout the DC region. The survey allows you to add markers to a map and make comments about how you would improve transportation infrastructure.

September 15: Next month, hear how one black architect started her own firm at a talk hosted by WIDEA (Women Inspiring Design, Equity in Architecture), a campaign to raise public awareness of architects and how the profession’s specialized training and experience in technology and aesthetics contribute to society.

Dina Griffin, AIA has worked with architects including Renzo Piano, Tod Williams, and Billie Tsien and has her own firm, Interactive Design Associates. She'll talk about the importance of mentoring and outreach to students and young professionals, particularly as a way to address low number of people of color in the architecture field. This lecture is on Friday, September 15 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Grand Hyatt Hotel (1000 H Street NW). Admission is $10, and you can buy tickets here.

September 22: Car Free Day returns to the DC area next month, encouraging commuters who drive to try telework, bicycling, walking, transit, or carpooling for one day. Those who take the free pledge will get a coupon for Chipotle and be entered into a raffle for prizes including Capital Bikeshare memberships, a $25 SmarTrip card, and a Kindle Fire. You can sign up at www.carfreemetrodc.org.
