To make a positive impact in the community, it’s important to do more than just read about and discuss issues online. We publish our weekly events post to tell you about opportunities to get out and act!

May is National Bike Month! What better way to celebrate than to ride in on Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 19th? There will be 85 “pit stops” set up on bike routes throughout DC, Maryland, and Virginia, where you can get a free t-shirt and refreshments and be entered into a raffle for a new bicycle.

Sign up today for the stop closest to you so the organizers can plan for what's hopefully the biggest Bike to Work Day yet (the event is headed up by Commuter Connections and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, but all kinds of organizations help run the pit stops). See you on two wheels!

Beyond Bike to Work Day, check out one of these other great events:

Monday, May 15: As modern urban landscapes age, it's important to consider how they can, or should, respond to contemporary expectations for public space. Join the National Capital Planning Commission for “Modernist Landscapes Reconsidered” from 6:30 pm to 8 pm at the National Building Museum (401 F Street NW).

Monday, May 15: Fairfax County wants a Route 1 that is walkable and transit-accessible, and that attracts the next generation of residents, companies, and employees. To get input on how to do this, the Route 1 task force is holding a big public meeting on Monday, May 15 at Whitman Middle School (2500 Parkers Lane, Alexandria, VA).

Tuesday, May 16: One of the reasons why there isn't enough affordable housing in DC is that it's hard for developers to balance market rate and affordable units. Join Jamie Weinbaum, Executive Vice President of MidCity Development, for his take on some of the challenges of redeveloping Brookland Manor. The talk, which is a paid event, is this Tuesday at 6:30 pm at 421 7th Street NW.

Saturday, May 20: Join the Coalition for Smarter Growth for a walking tour that explores the latest changes around Florida Avenue in NoMa, including the transformation of the historic Uline Arena, the redevelopment of Central Armature Works, the future east side Metro entrance, and Union Market. RSVP today!

Sunday, May 21: Explore and reimagine the Columbia Pike area on a walking tour with Walk Arlington, Arlington Arts, and artist Graham Coreil-Allen. The tour will start at 11 am at the Columbia Pike Farmers' Market (2820 Columbia Pike).
