Breakfast links: George and his town
Will it be George?
You have just two days to vote for a name for the new bike sharing system. “George” is currently in the lead, but DDOT’s John Lisle has picked up on DCist commenters’ “CaPedal” and WashCycle’s joking “Colbert.” (Examiner)
Georgetown endorses streetcars, mostly
The Georgetown ANC is okay with streetcars as long as they don’t take away any parking at all and the streetcar has no dedicated lanes. They could be okay with overhead wires on K, under the Whitehurst, as long as the Commission on Fine Arts approves, and are not okay with them on M or Wisconsin. (Georgetown Metropolitan)
“Complete Streets, incomplete BRAC”
Alexandria is woring on a Complete Streets ordinance. The Transportation Management Plan for BRAC-133/Mark Center is still “a bit lacking,” and mostly involves shuttles from WFC, EFC, Ballston, Pentagon, King Street, and possible Van Dorn and/or Franconia-Springfield. Gray better with Twitter, except on policy
Streetcar backlashes aside, Vincent Gray is outdoing Adrian Fenty in the use of social media. (DeBonis)
On the rails
Loudoun is concerned about rising costs on the Silver Line (Examiner) … A New York train operator talks about what it’s like to drive a subway train (NY Times, Stephen Miller) … Amtrak will permanently offer free Wi-Fi on Acela trains. (Examiner)
Federally
The AFL-CIO is pushing hard for the proposed bill to provide operating aid to transit systems, which could roll back some of the recent fare increase (Streetsblog Capitol Hill) … USDOT has more proposed airline passenger protections including my favorite, a requirement to display the actual fare you’ll pay instead of including some taxes and not others. (Cranky Flier)
Narrow streets yourself
An artist wanted narrower, less high-speed roads around LA, so he did it himself… with Photoshop. (Photojojo)
