Purple Line’s opening delayed until spring 2027
The opening date for the Purple Line has been pushed from fall 2026 to spring 2027 due to workforce shortages, supply chain issues, complex utility relocations, and other issues. WMATA to pilot alert system to make rail-to-bus transfers easier
WMATA is launching a pilot program that will alert bus drivers near a Metro station that a train is arriving by triggering a strobe light. The goal of the program is to have bus drivers wait for passengers, thereby making rail-to-bus transfers easier. The service will operate between Metrorail’s off-peak hours of 9 am to 2 pm and 7:30 pm to midnight when waits for the next bus are often 30 minutes or more. (Jordan Pascale / DCist)
DC cyclists hold ride to push for more protected bike lanes
Dozens of cyclists organized a 3.5-mile bike ride in DC on Saturday to push for protected bike lanes and other safety improvements. At least 5% of the District’s commuters bike to work, which is a larger share than most other cities. (Derrick Ward / NBC Washington)
Cyclist shot and killed Saturday in Northwest DC
Dzhoy Zuckerman, a well-known member of the DC cycling community who worked at Conte’s Bike Shop in Navy Yard, was shot and killed on Quackenbos Street NW just after midnight on Saturday. Dzhoy’s friends organized a 33-mile memorial ride in their honor on Sunday. The Metropolitan Police Department has not released details about the shooter or shooters. Arlington to purchase home for $1.5 million for stormwater relief
Arlington County will purchase a home in the Westover neighborhood for $1.5 million to demolish in order to provide a safe path for stormwater to flow to a stream or storm drain during heavy downpours. The purchase is part of a program to buy homes in the Sprout Run watershed that has been known to see heavy flooding. (Jo DeVoe / ARLNow)
Vienna, Dunn Loring Metro stations reopen
The Vienna and Dunn Loring Metro stations reopened after weeks of construction work that involved the replacement of 25 miles of rail and the clearance of vegetation near tracks. WMATA now moves on to its July 22-September 4 maintenance project on the Green Line. The Metro stations between Fort Totten and Greenbelt will be closed during that period for maintenance. New condos open in Tysons
A 94-unit condominium high-rise recently opened in the Arbor Row neighborhood in Tysons. The condos come after a four-year construction process, and apartments for seniors are expected to follow.
