In November 2024, voters in Washington, DC, will choose their most hyper-local elected officials: Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners. ANC seats are unpaid, part-time, nonpartisan, advisory roles, and are the official voice of their neighborhoods. There are 46 Advisory Neighborhood Commissions in the District, made up of 345 commissioners representing single-member districts of about 2,000 people.

Join GGWash on Sunday, July 14, for an in-person training on how to run for ANC, and for a discussion on how to serve if you’re elected. Anyone interested in running for an ANC seat is welcome to attend; alignment with GGWash’s stances on housing, transportation, and land use is not necessary. Sign up for the training here.

Explore reparations: For the final program sponsored by Undesign the Redline, come see The Cost of Inheritance, an hour-long PBS documentary that explores the complex issue of reparations in the United States using a thoughtful approach to historical injustices, systemic inequities, and the critical dialogue on racial conciliation.

The film will help set up a conversation with local leaders about what reparations could mean for individuals, institutions, and our communities. The goal is for all participants to better understand the issue and what their role might be in beginning and extending repair to today’s racial inequities in housing, health, education, and beyond. Learn how homeownership can play a role in closing the racial wealth gap: Despite high prices and unfavorable interest rates, wealth building through homeownership is still a dream for many. But homeownership is not always a clear path to wealth and is sometimes out of reach entirely, especially for households of color. Because of disparities in income and family wealth, real estate market discrimination, appraisal bias, and other factors, households of color face headwinds both as aspiring homeowners and after owning their home. In this event, explore innovative programs developed to navigate such headwinds.

Join the Urban Institute and practitioners from the Housing Innovation Program to learn about innovative approaches to overcoming homeownership barriers. Register here.
