A new GM, again

In case you missed it, WMATA has picked a new general manager, again. Paul J. Wiedefeld, a former head of the MTA and BWI Airport, has agreed to take up the challenge, but it’s not official until a WMATA Board vote on the 19th. (Post)

Stadium-Armory progress

Orange and Silver Line trains will start stopping at Stadium-Armory during rush hours again on Monday. WMATA was able to add extra power to a nearby substation to compensate for some of the damage caused by the September fire.

Here comes the highway bill

The House passed a bipartisan six-year highway and transit bill yesterday. If it gets through the Senate, it could be the first long-term highway bill to pass in Congress in over a decade. But it still relies on a stagnant and insufficient gas tax for funding. (POLITICO)

Future DC is all TOD

It’s all about the beer

Metro had floated the idea of allowing food and beverage sales as a way to boost falling revenue, but the proposal was withdrawn. However, the Board will likely approve alcohol ads that could bring in millions of dollars. (Post)

Unemployement inequality

DC has the highest black unemployment rate in the country when compared to states. The gap between white and black unemployment is highest in DC as well. (HuffPost)

Here’s a map of every road fatality from 2004 to 2013 in the US. Well over half of these crashes are attributable to alcohol, speeding, and/or distraction and all of them should be preventable. (CityLab)
