We realize 2020 has been a heck of a year (for us too!), so we are extending our application deadline until the end of the year.

There is a difference between wanting to be great and wanting to be greater. One sounds like a boast, the other an aspiration. One is revealing, one inspiring. One has an impossible to reach end date, the other is an evolving mission.

Greater Greater Washington is an organization that empowers people with information and resources to be a better, more walkable, and diverse region. We ain’t there yet, but we want to be, and we’re looking for a leader to take us on the next part of our journey.

For more than 12 years our founder, David Alpert, has been the anchor of Greater Greater Washington, using articles, advocacy, and a little spice to move the needle on affordable housing, zoning, better and more equitable transit, and mobility for all.

David applied his unique and diverse skill set and commitment to bringing awareness to transit issues like dedicated bus lanes and progressive pricing for bus to rail transfers, a better comprehensive plan for the District, and the intersection between historic preservation and solar panel regulations.

In July, David announced he planned to step down to make room for a new leader to guide the next era of GGWash. Caitlin Rogger took over in October to lead the transition period, because rather than trying to find someone to step in the exact shoes of David Alpert, we’re using the interim to better understand ourselves as an organization and pull on the strengths of our amazing existing team. Now it’s time for the next step.

We’re excited for GGWash’s next phase

Every presidency transitions to the next, and every bus route reaches its terminus (hopefully near affordable housing). David gathered and empowered a team to help carry on the mission of a greater Greater Washington region. Twelve plus years also means a robust community ready to continue the conversations, debates, and priority setting for a more equitable and sustainable region.

2021 means a lot of new everything — new leadership, new ideas — and we are here for it. We’re excited for the opportunity to grow, meet new challenges, and explore the value we can bring in a policy, economic and social landscape in which much is familiar, but constraints and opportunities are evolving.

We are looking for a proven nonprofit leader, who loves urbanism and the Washington region, to become the next Executive Director of Greater Greater Washington. Our new ED will be responsible for organizational management, ensuring the sustainability of our funding streams, and empowering both staff and community members to make the most of their talents and commitments toward our shared mission. We’re looking for someone who is committed to anti-racist principles and practices, and able to incorporate anti-racist perspectives into the workplace.

A successful candidate will possess significant experience with sustainable funding strategies, financial stewardship skills, and a collaborative leadership style.

To apply, send a resume; a one-page personal narrative discussing why you feel this is a great position for you; and two writing samples to Louise Stoner Crawford at search@capacitypartners.com. Please put “GGWash ED Search” in the subject line.

Applications will be accepted until December 31, 2020.
