Support victims of traffic violence in Ride for Your Life 2023: Last year, Families for Safe Streets MoCo and WABA organized the Ride for Your Life to honor Sarah Langenkamp, who was killed in Bethesda earlier that year. This year, they are hosting the 2023 Ride for Your Life on the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims to raise public awareness of the many traffic victims within the DC metro area and take a cycling tour past various crash sites. Join this ride to show your support for loved ones lost and push elected leaders to see the demand for Vision Zero. This event will happen rain or shine. Learn more & RSVP here.

Tuesday, November 14:

Discuss solutions for today’s housing supply problem: Lack of new construction, rising interest rates, racial disparities in homeownership rates, and climate change all threaten the future of homeownership. This Tuesday, The Urban Institute and NCST (National Community Stabilization Trust) are hosting a hybrid event to discuss the challenges that first-time homebuyers face and ways to combat today’s housing supply problem. This event focuses on local perspectives and solutions, policy reforms to increase affordable supply, and the state of REO and distressed or defaulted mortgages properties. Learn more & RSVP here.

Attend a webinar elevating equity and safety in government transportation project prioritization: The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) is hosting a webinar to discuss tools and strategies that help integrate equity and safety into state, regional, and local agency project-prioritization processes. By focusing on equity and safety in the transportation planning process, USDOT hopes to move closer to reaching zero deaths and serious injuries. Experts will discuss the need to invest a greater share of transportation funding in underserved communities through the government-wide Justice40 Initiative. Thursday, November 16:

Learn about the social and economic trends that reinforce generational poverty: Join Luke Shaefer, Kathryn Edin and Timothy Nelson in a conversation about their new book The Injustice of Place: Uncovering the Legacy of Poverty in America at the Urban Institute. Throughout the discussion, panelists will explore the inequalities shaping people’s health and livelihoods from Appalachia, the Cotton and Tobacco Belts, and South Texas. The authors analyze the commonalities of these places to develop a multidimensional “Index of Deep Disadvantage.” This event will also include a discussion on the reinforcement of poverty across generations due to historic economic and social structures. Join a conversation on the youths impact on transportation: The next generation is creating a new culture when it comes to transportation and is taking action towards creating a safer, more equitable, more accessible, and sustainable transportation system. This Thursday, America Walks and the National Organization for Youth Safety (NOYS) are hosting a webinar about ways that young people are challenging narratives about transportation in America. Sunday, November 19:

Remember those lost to traffic violence in Northern Virginia: Unsafe driving habits and loose traffic regulations have led to over 30 traffic fatalities and serious injuries in Northern Virginia. This Sunday, join members of Northern Virginia Families for Safe Streets (NoVA FSS) to participate in World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims 2023. At this event, NoVa FSS will focus on calling attention to the need for change when it comes to the issue of traffic fatalities and serious injuries. They plan to elevate the voices of those affected, and advocate for robust traffic regulations with a vision of zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries in all three Northern Virginia jurisdictions of Alexandria, Arlington, and Fairfax.
