Join Chesapeake Climate Action Network, Coalition for Smarter Growth, YIMBY’s of NOVA, and Washington Area Bike Association on Saturday, August 12 as they work to show how climate justice brings biking, housing, and clean energy advocates together. There will be representatives from each organization who will talk about the importance of advocating for cleaner, more sustainable, and more livable communities. They will discuss why people should–and how they can–advocate for affordable and accessible housing, an increase in better public transportation, and clean energy policies. There will be free popsicles, doughnuts, and coffee for attendees! Learn more & RSVP here.

Tuesday, August 8:

Learn about the Anacostia River on a boat tour: Did you know you can learn all about the importance of the Anacostia River while taking a boat ride? Anacostia Riverkeeper organizes recurring boat tours to teach people about the history, wildlife, and environmental threats of the Anacostia River and to explain what they are doing to protect it. Each tour also offers up solutions that show all that the river has to offer our local community and ecosystems. Learn more & RSVP here.

Wednesday, August 9:

Tour the location of the 11th Street Bridge Park project: The 11th Street Bridge Park will be the city’s first elevated public park. Located over the Anacostia River and on the piers of the old 11th Street Bridge, this park is a locally designed project created to be a resource for the local community. The park will feature space for recreation, the arts, and environmental education and aims to bring DC residents back to the river. Want to know more about this upcoming community green space? The 11th Street Bridge Park team is hosting a walking tour around the future site of the park. On the tour you will hear in-depth details about the design, progress, and history of the park by the team’s Senior equitable Development Manager. Learn more & RSVP here.

Thursday, August 10:

Obtain your Inclusionary Zoning Certificate: If you are interested in buying or renting a home but not sure you are eligible, the Inclusionary Zoning program might be able to help. Inclusionary Zoning is a law in DC that requires developers to make a specific number of units available for income eligible households so they can rent or purchase below the city’s market prices. That’s why the Latino Economic Development Center is hosting an introductory orientation to the program for DC residents. Upon completion of the two-hour orientation and confirmed attendance, you will receive an Inclusionary Zoning Certificate that is valid for two years. This is a monthly recurring orientation, so there will be more opportunities to obtain this certificate if you cannot make this one! The next one will be on Thursday, September 14. Learn more & RSVP here.

Saturday, August 12:

Learn how the historic Columbia Pike corridor came to be one of the most diverse communities in the US: Join a conversation about the Columbia Pike Documentary Project and the current show, A World in a Zip Code, at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) in Arlington, Virginia, with members of the team who created it. This project includes a video, photographs, and an oral history in order to capture the evolution of the historic Columbia Pike corridor, one of the United States’ most ethnically diverse communities. A World in a Zip Code also explores the significant changes that the area has endured over the last few years that are related to an increase in new development and how those changes have impacted the corridor’s residents. No RSVP is needed. Learn more about the event here.

Sunday, August 13:

Join a bike ride: The Veg Society of DC (VSDC) is hosting a 24.5 mile bike ride on Sunday, August 13 from Bethesda to DC and back.
