Here are the answers to whichWMATA week 155

On Tuesday, we featured the 155th challenge to see how well you know the Metro system. Here are the answers. How’d you do?

This week, we got 13 guesses. Eleven of you got all five. Great work Ginger, Kevin M, Isaac Alvarez, People’s Republic Soldier, Christopher Deal, J-Train-21, Peter K, AlexC, ArlFfx, Frank IBC, and MtPDC!

Image 1: Farragut West

The first image shows the area around the west entry to Farragut West. The granite wall at top is the escalator shaft for the Metro entrance. The escalators in the foreground don’t lead directly down into Farragut West station, but it is possible to get to the station from them. They lead into the food court under International Square.

Twelve of you knew this one.

Image 2: Court House

The second image shows the Court House Plaza entry to Court House station. This entry is not original to the station, but was added as part of the development that houses the Arlington County government center on the right side of the picture.

Twelve of you got this one right.

Image 3: Friendship Heights

The third image looks south along the northern mezzanine at Friendship Heights. The vault here is an Arch I vault, which are present only at the Red Line stations between Woodley Park and Medical Center. But of those stations, only one has mezzanines at both ends: Friendship Heights. However, within the next few years, a second mezzanine will start to take shape at Bethesda station. Construction hasn’t started within the station yet.

Another clue is the co-located elevator and escalator. This arrangement embedded within a mezzanine is very rare.

Twelve of you figured this one out.

Image 4: Medical Center

The fourth image shows construction cranes and the elevator at Medical Center station. This station is currently having a second entry constructed on the opposite side of Rockville Pike. A tunnel just below the street will allow people to walk between the National Institutes of Health on the west side of Rockville Pike and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on the east side without going all the way down to the Metro mezzanine.

Eleven of you guessed correctly.

Image 5: Benning Road

The final image shows the rear of the escalator canopy at Benning Road station. The distinctively blue Shrimp Boat Plaza is visible in the background. It has recently been repainted in more earthy tones, but the current google maps aerial shows the blue awning.

Twelve of you came to the correct conclusion.

Great work, everyone. Thanks for playing! We’ll be back in two weeks with challenge #156.
