New Google Earth images show the latest changes in the Washington region

This week, Google Earth added new aerial images of the Washington region from April 30 of this year. These images provide an updated view of some of the region’s latest infrastructure projects.
Prior to the addition of these images, the latest views of the region available of Google Earth were from 2016. Since then, much progress has been made on various transit, road, and development projects across DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

In the District, the updated views show the progress of the Capitol Crossing project, showing I-395 fully decked over with new buildings going up above the freeway. Also visible is the plethora of new construction around Navy Yard and DC United’s new home, Audi Field.

In Maryland, the images show the Purple Line construction from Bethesda to New Carrollton, which began last year, including the start of tunnel construction in the Long Branch area of Silver Spring.

The images show new bike lanes in downtown Silver Spring, the growth of Riverdale Park Station in Riverdale, and the new Watkins Mill interchange under construction in Gaithersburg.

In northern Virginia, significant progress on phase 2 of the Silver Line can be seen. Stations are nearing completion, tracks have been laid on much of the new railbed, and significant transit-oriented development is occurring around the Ashburn station.
